From the Editor's Desk: Madeline Malynn and her Time in Pi Sigma Epsilon

Madeline Malynn

I have always been a collector of words. Starting my freshman year of high school, I began curating a word list of anything that caught my attention from books, movies or songs. I would put these words in my notes app on my iPhone, creating a perfect outlet to quickly jot down my newest finding. Nothing brought me more joy than watching as my list expanded and my vocabulary began to reflect my hobby.

When joining PSE, I knew I wanted to become involved in leadership in some way, but I was unsure the need for an English major in a business heavy extra-curricular. After a semester in the fraternity, I saw the application for my now current position, Director of Press. My position requires me to maintain the weekly blog posts and quarterly newsletters, a position made entirely of writing. As someone who began writing at a young age, and quite literally collects words for fun, I knew this was the leadership I had been searching for.

One of my favorite words in my list is resonance, of which I first heard from a song. Although the word itself is common enough, I discovered it my sophomore year of high school and felt such a power from it. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the word, resonance has two definitions, “The ability to evoke or suggest images, memories or emotions” and “to feel shared emotions or beliefs with someone or something.” This word has a direct correlation to my experience with PSE. I resonate with the beliefs and values present in Pi Sigma Epsilon. I resonate with the belief of diversity and inclusion, and the many opportunities provided for any major, interest and individual.

My time as Director of Press will soon be ending, as a new member will take over, and my time as a brother is fleeting with the inevitability of graduating. My position in PSE has opened new doors for me as I begin an editorial internship this spring, something I never knew I would find from a business club. Pi Sigma Epsilon gave me an outlet to use my beloved words, and I will always resonate with the brotherhood we call home.
